2018 Landsafe Clinic

September 8th-9th, 2018

Riding can be a dangerous sport.
Of course, we try to take every precaution to stay safe. We work at our balance, we get a good fitting saddle and quality instruction.
But the fact is... accidents happen. Falls happen.
We can't avoid all the risk, but we can prepare for it. We can learn how to fall.
I became interested in learning to fall several years ago when I took up a martial art and realized how valuable the skill of falling could be for my life as a rider and trainer.
I learned the techniques and then I practiced, but I still doubted how much I could actually implement this learning until... a young horse I was riding stopped hard right before a big oxer.
We came into the grid and she was moving forward, but then I got just a bit ahead of her motion and right before the oxer, she hit the brakes. I sailed overhead and the next thing I knew I was sitting - I wasn't hurt, I wasn't bruised, I felt fine.
The last time I'd had that type of overhead fall I'd been a teenager and when I stuck my arm out to break my fall I broke my arm.
This time, I'd simply rolled out of it!
Does learning to fall guarantee your safety? Of course not. Will doing it a few times help you? Probably not. But with consistent practice, you can train your body to come to the ground out of a fall without injury, and September 8-9, Landsafe will be here at Honey Brook Stables to show you how.
Over two days, you'll work on big mats to learn the very basics of being able to roll out of a fall, and then when you're ready you can take your new skills to Landsafe's simulator!
This session provides you with an opportunity to see for yourself the difference rider education can make to a fall scenario. The segment will feature the following activities:

DAY 1
Two hours of gymnastics skill building will start your day. Here you will learn the correct ways to shape, roll, position arms and wrists, balance, body awareness and the control needed to become competent in a dive roll.
The next two hours will be spent transferring these skills to the simulator.

DAY 2
We will revisit the basic gymnastics skills learned on day 1 and look for ways for you to develop stronger skills while working at home. The time spent is dependent on progress of skills, hoping to be 1 to 1.5 hours.
The second part of the day two session will be devoted to skills on the simulator, here we will also visit a variety of different types of fall scenarios.
This program is designed to teach the basic skills to improve your body awareness and self-preservation.

*We can vary the speed and height to suit each individual’s needs.
* Our goal is to build confidence and muscle memory.
We believe this is only the beginning of your journey to being a better and safer rider. As with all sports practice is paramount and continued education is key.
